DESCRIPTION: Australian native tree with cylindrical golden-toffee flowers in autumn-winter, and bushy branches of slender leaves, variable in appearance. The parent plant of many popular cultivars.
ORIGIN :Native to locations along the east coast from FNQ to southern NSW
USE FOR : Coastal gardens, wildlife gardens – birds adore these plants and are kept busy for ages. Informal hedges and screens.
PLANTING: Plant in a well drained in a sunny position for best flowering season. Is able to tolerate frost and salt spray. Grows in sand, loam, and clay in the wild. Regrows after fire.
CARE: Prune as required after flowering to maintain dense growth. Feed with a slow release native fertiliser during spring – Banksia are phosphorus-sensitive so the P ratio of the fertiliser needs to be under 3%. Leaves may yellow in alkaline soils, but plants are happy grown in pots if this is the case.
HEIGHT & WIDTH: 2m H x 2m W. Plants are frequently smaller in cool climates and exposed sites.
