APPEARANCE : Native to Asia, this fast-growing late winter to early spring-flowering shrub has snow-white cup-shaped flowers on bare spiny branches.
USES: Informal boundary hedge, sheltering hedge for wildlife, feature shrub, winter colour, can be espaliered against a wall. Small fragrant fruits are sour raw, but high in pectin and can be used to make jams.
PLANTING: Plant in pretty much any neutral to acid soil in a full sun to partly shaded position in the garden. Will even grow in heavy clay. Supposedly deer-resistant so try it with roos.
CARE: Mulch and water regularly until the plant is established, usually around 12 weeks. Prune as required after flowering to maintain shape and plant health, and fertilise with a slow release fertiliser in spring. Suited to most climates in Australia. Hardy to -20C
