The tropical twin of the Mediterranean pencil pine (though actually related to custard apples), this beautiful weeping slender tree will grow tall and straight and not very wide.

It loves a humid warm climate, where it is a fantastic noise baffler on busy roads a well as being highly ornamental in a garden setting.

tree pair image: Leonora Enking; flower image NHQ cropped to size.

Polyalthia longifolia, Monoon longifolium – mast tree
APPEARANCE : Tall slender conical tree with a straight trunk and short weeping branches. Leaves are slender and long, glossy, with rippled edges, emerging golden copper and maturing from light to deep green. Insignificant green flowers turn to grape-like seed-fruits
ORIGIN : Southern India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka
USE FOR : Planted in rows in formal garden settings, lining a driveway, or as a feature tree. Excellent as a noise baffle alongside roads. Food plant for swallowtail butterflies and koels. Useful timber tree.
CLIMATE : Frost free, subtropical or tropical
PLANTING : Plant in a moist soil rich in organic matter. Site carefully as there is nothing sadder than a tree lopped short to fit a space.
CARE : Mulch and water well until the plant is established, usually around 12 weeks, prune as needed to promote new growth or maintain slender profile.
HEIGHT & WIDTH : to 20 m H x 2-3 m W in optimal conditions, usually 6-10m in gardens
YOUR PLANTS : These are tubestock plants, healthy young plants with new roots that will establish quickly in your garden. The pot size is 80mm high and 42 mm wide.
You can see an example in the image gallery.
